Automating IIS from the Command-Line/Scripting Webcast
I gave a presentation recently on automating IIS from the command-line (you can check it out at: https://www.livemeeting.com/cc/mseventsbmo/view?id=1032352182&role=attend&pw=D80FDE8D). I focused on how to manage IIS using PowerShell, WMI, and AppCmd. I talked a lot about Server Core as well, and the management options for IIS with Server Core.

Health model and KB round-ups
I have troubleshooting on the mind this week since we just released the IIS7 health model (you can check it out at http://technet2.microsoft.com/windowsserver2008/en/library/b19873a2-9f72-40c8-b73d-89f39cda62781033.mspx?mfr=true). When we talk about diagnostics, we talk a lot about the new diagnostic features like FREB in IIS7 -- Mike has blogged about these in depth at http://blogs.iis.net/mvolo/archive/2007/07/26/troubleshoot-iis7-errors-like-a-pro.aspx. What's neat about the health model is it provides information about every error message that you will encounter in IIS. Take, for example, error code 2269: http://technet2.microsoft.com/windowsserver2008/en/library/b19873a2-9f72-40c8-b73d-89f39cda62781033.mspx?mfr=true. It gives you specific steps to fix and verify the fix for error message "The worker process for app pool '%1', PID='%2', failed to initialize the http.sys communication when asked to start processing http requests and therefore will be considered ill by W3SVC and terminated. The data field contains the error number." Really useful information for free, phone-less troubleshooting. The health model might not have the final solution to every problem, but it is a great first step for troubleshooting any error.

If you posted a comment on some of my blog posts recently...
I just realized that I had a bunch of comments stacked up in an unapproved queue. Sorry! I had some spam issues with the blog and switched to moderated comments. I've gone through and pushed the comments through now, and will be answering them. I really do want to hear from you so I will go huddle with Pete, who is our IIS.NET guru and figure out how I can have a spamless blog that lets real comments come through. Sorry for the delay and keep sending the comments and questions my way.

FastCGI Extension for IIS6 – GoLive to RTM release upgrade
As it has been already mentioned in download instructions for FastCGI Extension RTM for IIS 6, we do not support in-place upgrade of FastCGI Extension from pre-RTM builds to RTM build. If you have been running pre-RTM build (such as GoLive release or Intermediate release), you will need to uninstall it first and then install FastCGI RTM. This post describes some situations to watch out for during upgrade process.

IIS on Vista Patches As Of 11/15/2007
So far, we have only had two patches for IIS7 on Vista.

RTM of FastCGI for IIS6
The IIS team is happy to announce that the RTM version of the FastCGI for IIS is now available for download at http://www.iis.net/downloads/default.aspx?tabid=34&g=6&i=1521. FastCGI support on IIS6, which is a free download, opens up the Windows Server 2003 platform for hosting PHP and other FastCGI-compliant application frameworks with substantially improved performance and stability. In FastCGI, we are reusing CGI processes for multiple requests to PHP applications so that we can have comparable hosting of PHP hosting on Windows to Linux. As part of this effort, we have been validating the popular PHP applications on Windows and publishing walkthroughs that give step by step instructions on how to setup and install the most popular PHP apps on top of FastCGI and Windows Server.

Follow-up on my TechNet webcast on What's New in IIS7 for IT Pros
To follow up on some specific questions that I had during the webcast:
-
TechNet Radio Interview on IIS Modules
We have released a number of modules that you can download from www.iis.net to run on IIS in Windows Server 2008 RC0, namely:
-
New API to avoid restarting IIS when you add a new app pool (Windows Server 2008, RC0)
One of the things we worked hard on in IIS7 was eliminating unnecessary restarts of IIS in daily operations of the Web server. In the recent RC0 release of Windows Server 2008 RC0, we added an API for folks who want to automate flushing the token cache on IIS7. This might be something that you would want to do if you change settings that would change properties of the token after it is cached. Before RC0, that would require restarting IIS. With this new API, you can automate flushing the token cache without restarting IIS7.

Windows Server 2008 RC0 Available Now!
Windows Server 2008 RC0 is available for download today! There is a lot of excitement in the hallways here in Redmond. Since our release of Beta 3, we spent a lot of time working with IIS customers, getting feedback on our product and making sure that we could address important requests. In Windows Server 2008 RC0, available today, we added to IIS:

LogParser Forums on IIS.NET
We have migrated the LogParser.com forums to IIS.NET! Feel free to check out the thousands of posts at http://forums.iis.net/default.aspx?GroupID=51, all relating to logparser usage, troubleshooting, and other factoids. We did not automatically migrate existing customer accounts from the old logparser forums because that would be, well, bad. We still list the people who posted on www.logparser.com (you know who you are) -- if you want to participate in more discussions, feel free to register with IIS.NET. We will get the rest of the content (articles, etc.) from www.logparser.com migrated shortly, followed by the log parser download itself will take a little while longer. In the meantime, feel free to start your discussions again on logparser in its new home.

TechNet Radio interview on IIS7 for IT Pros
Yesterday, I chatted with John Weston for TechNet Radio broadcast interview, which targets IT Pros as an audience. We talked about a range of topics, from security and performance to my favorite IT features in the product. You can hear the interview at: http://www.microsoft.com/technet/community/tnradio/archive/july312007.mspx. It's 27 minutes long. There's a lot to talk about with IIS7, and I was a little disappointed to have to stop. :-)

Building IIS.NET, the web site
As you've probably picked up already, we care a lot about IIS.NET and the development community that we are forming around the Web site. The IIS product group is deeply invested in putting relevent and insightful content in place, as well as providing a forum for code development and sharing. We talk about the site and you customers out there every day. We partner with Telligent to build the IIS.NET infrastructure. We have one great Telligent developer who works on the site, Scott, and are looking for another to help him continue to build the best IIS community site. If you are interested in Web site development for our IIS community, you can check out the job posting for Telligent here:

Optimizing for media delivery
I had the opportunity to speak at TechEd US in June this year, co-presenting with Brad Abrams and Sam Zhang on creating and delivering rich media on Windows Server 2008. Brad covered Ajax and Silverlight, I talked about WMS and some new functionality that we're planning to integrate into IIS, and Sam did an AWESOME demo of live streaming, from encoding in Expression to delivery to a Silverlight client via WMS. Demos at big conferences like TechEd can be scary enough, depending on its complexity -- Sam took it to the next level by setting up a full end-to-end live streaming environment, with a web cam balanced on a little tower of catering trays and an ice bucket, a client laptop and a server laptop. The demo went smooth as silk -- any time Sam gets tired of coding, he has a second career as a speaker.

Hello
Hi, everyone. My name is Mai-lan Tomsen Bukovec. I joined the IIS team three months ago as the Group Program Manager for IIS. I haven't blogged to devs in a while, not since I talked about Visio dev issues at http://blogs.msdn.com/mailant/archive/tags/Dev+Blog/default.aspx. I've been at Microsoft for about eight years now (egads, I feel old), working in the Server division (Microsoft Transaction Server and a new Windows Server SKU code-named "Centro") and the Office division (Visio). I've had a lot of fun on the IIS team in my first three months and am fired up about getting the latest IIS7 bits out to you all.
